GUIDELINES FOR RECOMMENDATION OF DUTY WAIVER ON IMPORTATION OF ITEMS FOR REFURBISHMENT / RENOVATION OF REGISTERED TOURIST HOTELS AFFECTED BY TSUNAMI

•  Only the Tourist Hotels Registered and licensed by the Sri Lanka Tourist Board are eligible to apply.

•  The scheme is operative w.e.f 01 st March,2005 and valid till 31 December, 2006.

•  A planned programme of refurbishment /renovation to be completed in one(01) year, should be submitted along with the application form to the Sri Lanka Tourist Board .

•  Final list of items to be submitted : on or before 31 st May,2005.

•  Letter of credit( LC) to be opened : on or before 31 st August,2005

•  Items to be imported to the country. : on or before 28 th Feburary,2006

•  However where a hotel/s has received extensive damage, the above dates to be reviewed by the Board of Directors of Sri Lanka Tourist Board, but will not exceed 31 st December,2006.

(4) The following fees will be charged for processing of applications.

a. Less than 50 rooms - Rs.15,000

b. 50 or more rooms - Rs.25,000

•  Only brand new equipment , machinery and utensils (not used items)are allowed

under this scheme.

(6) The following items have been excluded from the Duty Free List in order to protect the local industries.

a. Cement e. Wall tiles

b. Wires and Cables f. Floor tiles

•  TOR Steel g. Paints

•  Granite h. PVC products

(7) On completion of the work , the Board should be informed to carry out an audit of items imported under the scheme.

(8) If the items imported have not been used for the intended purpose such items will

be confiscated and duty with penalty will be imposed by the Department of Customs on the recommendation of the Sri Lanka Tourist Board.

(9) To qualify for this scheme the hotel should have paid the Tourism Development

Levy(TDL) up todate.

(10)Tourist Hotels where permanent / contract employees have been laid off contravening labour regulations are not eligible for the concessions.

(11)Applications and all correspondence regarding the scheme should be sent to

Director / Corporate Services , Sri Lanka Tourist Board on or before

31 st May, 2005.

(12) Tourist Hotels are required to enter into a MOU with the Sri Lanka

Tourist Board.
